A man scrapes corn kernels off of dried ears in an Agriculture Concession on the banks of the Tambopata River. The owner of the land switched to sustainable agroforestry practices seven years ago. Instead of slash and burn agriculture, he plants two legume species throughout his fields, which replenish soil nutrients. This concession is in the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve. A recent study projected that development from the new Interoceanic Highway will reach 50 km from the highway, thus deoforesting the buffer zone and reaching up to 20 kilometers into the reserve itself. Sustainable agroforestry practices are one method of preserving forest while supporting local livelihoods.
